A 36 year veteran of Walt Disney Feature Animation, Glen Keane is most noted for creating and animating such legendary Disney characters as Ariel in "The Little Mermaid", Aladdin, Pocahontas, the Beast from "Beauty and the Beast", and Tarzan. Most recently Keane served as Supervising Animator and Executive Producer on Disney's 2010 box office hit, Tangled.
In 1972, Keane enrolled in the Cal Arts fine arts program, but when his portfolio ended up at the school of film graphics (i.e. animation) by accident, he decided to give it a whirl. At the age of 19, he discovered that animation was a combination of all the arts and fell in love with the medium.
He joined Disney in 1974 and trained under Walt Disney’s legendary animators Ollie Johnson, Frank Thomas and Eric Larson. He started out animating scenes on The Rescuers before being promoted to directing animator on "The Fox and the Hound". Glen grew up in Paradise Valley, Arizona as the middle child of five where his father Bil Keane created the syndicated comic “The Family Circus.” He and his wife Linda have two children, Claire and Max and live in Santa Clarita, California.
In addition to his work as an animator, he is the author and illustrator of a series of children's Bible parable books featuring Adam Raccoon and King Aren the Lion.
The Texas Avery Animation Award honors the best and brightest of the animation industry. The award was first given in 2007 at AFI Dallas (now the Dallas International Film Festival). Six years later, the award has been bestowed upon animation legends such as Academy Award® nominees Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders (How To Train Your Dragon, Lilo & Stitch); Academy Award® winners Pete Docter (Up, Monsters Inc.) and Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Ratatouille); and Academy Award® nominees Henry Selick (Coraline, James and the Giant Peach) and Chris Wedge (Ice Age, Robots).
The award honors the legacy of cartoonist, voice actor and director, Frederick Bean “Fred/Tex” Avery. Avery set the animation standard for decades during The Golden Age of Hollywood animation. He did his most significant work for the Warner Bros. and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) studios, creating iconic characters like Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny, Droopy, Screwy Squirrel, and developing Porky Pig and Chilly Willy. Avery was born in Texas, and attended North Dallas High School, just a few miles away from both Reel FX and the Dallas Film Society who give the award honoring Texas Animation and Avery’s name each year. The award itself is a work of art, cast by Dallas sculptor Brad Oldham in pewter. It is inspired by Tex Avery’s classic wolf from “Red Hot Riding Hood.”
This year, the Texas Avery Animation Award again honors an award-winning animator, author and illustrator who has brought to life some of the most beloved Disney characters of all time, including Ariel in The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Pocahontas, the Beast from "Beauty and the Beast", and Tarzan. Most recently he served as Supervising Animator and Executive Producer on Disney's 2010 box office hit, Tangled.
